Cleaning of Trabecular Metals and other sintered metal products present a difficult cleaning challenge. The combinations of a very fine microstructure and at varying depths make cleaning of these substrates difficult. Typical cleaning methodologies include multi-step ultrasonic process cleaning using both solvents and water, that must be followed by an additional drying process.

Cool Clean Technologies, the leader in carbon dioxide CO2-based Precision Cleaning and Surface Preparation technology, successfully processes porous titanium and other high value metal substrates with complex geometries for the medical industry using the Enertia™ cleaning system.

Enertia™ is a complete liquid CO2 centrifugal cleaning system that includes both cleaning and recycling in a single compact unit. The Enertia™ process combines unique centrifugal dry washing and rinsing processes using specially formulated environmentally friendly high-boiling solvents with recycled CO2. The cleaning ability of the centrifugal CO2 process is derived from a combination of unique solvent cleaning power and physical cleaning action (i.e., centrifugal fluid shear, ultrasonic agitation and spray-under-immersion). Based on years of cleaning experience in a wide variety of cleaning applications we have now reached commercial success in the medical orthopedic market, as the Enertia™ system is now setting new standards in the demanding and complex medical device cleaning arena.

Customers successfully conduct Enertia™ system cleaning tests on medical orthopedic implantable components with trabecular metal and other complex geometric surfaces, which were contaminated with a wide variety of residues that include machining oils, particulate matter and other contaminants.

With the Enertia™ system parts are removed clean and dry; eliminating secondary drying; and all fluids are recycled internally eliminating the need for a secondary waste recovery facility.

Typical customer cleanliness tests conducted on parts cleaned with the Enertia™ system are as follows:

H2O Extraction

CCL4 Extraction

TOC Analysis

Particle Residue Testing

Customers find that the Enertia™ process produces cleaning results that are an order of magnitude better than the current aqueous-based cleaning systems.

The Enertia™ systems come with a stainless steel cleaning vessel, and are available as a top-loading or as a front-loading precision system with semi-automatic closures. The Enertia™ is a closed loop system which recovers and reuses 99% or greater of the CO2 used in the process. The integrated CO2 recycling and purification system provides fast, continuous, and energy-efficient cleaning. Options are available such as programmable additive injection to make it easy to enhance your process for removal of stubborn contaminants. Our optional High Boiling Solvent (HBS) package is standard on some models and it offers outstanding cleaning performance for difficult residues. The PLC process control with graphical user interface and the easy-to-load stainless steel parts baskets all come standard. Customized cleaning baskets and fixtures can be developed by our engineering team to securely hold your unique parts for maximum cleaning efficacy.

Dry Machining

Dry machining is essentially machining without the use of any cutting fluid or coolant. It is becoming increasingly popular due to:

Concerns regarding the environment

Operator Safety – Fumes and splashing coolant

Issues related to the use of conventional flood coolants

“Dry” may work better for certain metals (Example Aluminum)

Eliminates cleaning and messy work environment

Dry machining is typically reserved for certain applications, and it may never completely replace the use of cutting fluids, but developments are being made. A significant new advancement called the ChilAire™ cooling system, offers the performance benefits of a dry coolant and the environmental benefits of dry machining, all with great economics.

The ChilAire™ system by Cool Clean Technologies, LLC represents the only machining dry coolant. Machining facilities can perform hard turning and milling of hard materials by utilizing the ChilAire™ revolutionary CO2technology. Benefits of ChilAire™ are as follows:

Clean Operator Work Environment

No Splashing Coolant

Cutting Tool Does Not Experience Thermal Shock

Improved Economics

No Secondary Cleaning

By controlling the temperature of the cut zone, customers are able to use lower cost cutting tools on applications that typically require higher prices CBN, Ceramic, PCD, etc. The ChilAire™ system keeps the tool and work piece at ambient temperatures, hence preventing thermal shock. Until the advent of ChilAire™, there has never been a truly safe coolant that can also be considered “dry”.

The process is simple: Compressed gaseous CO2 is refrigerated into the liquid phase. The chilled liquid is transported to the nozzle where liquid CO2 and compressed air are mixed. The CO2 is allowed to expand into crystals that are delivered to the cutting zone. When the spray hits the cutting edge, the ice-crystals melt and flash back to CO2 gas in a process called sublimation – a physical state conversion, capable of absorbing significant amounts of heat.

Cool Clean Technologies will be presenting the new phenomenon of machine cooling using CO2 or in essence “dry machining” for drilling of stackup composite at the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) in Long Beach, CA, on Monday, May 6th at 4:40pm.

One key problem manufacturers in the aerospace and automotive industry have when drilling stackups and Titanium (Ti), is the ability to efficiently drill holes through the layers to install fasteners and other components. Dan Schiller will discuss that using CO2 through tool “dry cooling”; it is possible to protect both layers, overall showing significant benefits over traditional cooling or lubrication.

Speaker BIO: Mr. Dan Schiller is the Chief Operating Officer at Cool Clean Technologies, LLC. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Dakota.
